Boys & Girls is Hamasaki Ayumi's ninth single. Boys & Girls was used as the Kao "AUBE" lipstick CM song, featuring Hamasaki on the commercial. The song was so successful that she was invited to perform it at the annual Kohaku Uta Gassen concert. This single reached #2 on the Oricon charts in its first week, and #1 on the next three weeks. It sold 1,033,390 copies in 1999, becoming the #11 single of the year. It charted for 17 weeks and sold a total of 1,037,950 copies, making it her first single to sell over a million copies. This single is also Hamasaki's first to chart on the United World Charts.
The second vinyl released alongside with 'appears/immature' and 'Fly high' vinyls are official and were produced as collector's items that were available only at the shows during the Concert Tour 2000. They are relatively rare but do occassionally appear on e-bay.

"TO BE" is the eighth single released by Hamasaki Ayumi. This is Hamasaki's last single to be released in 8cm CD version. The title track was used as the CM song for JT Peach Water drinks which featuring Hamasaki herself. The single reached #4 on the weekly charts and stayed on the charts for a total of fifteen weeks. The single also became the the #64 single of 1999. The single sold 109,860 copies during it's first weeks sales and it has since sold a total of 324,500 copies.
The single was re-released in 2001 on a 12cm format with extra remix songs. This time around the single reached #26 and charted for three weeks.

Music Video
The music video for "TO BE" was directed by longtime collaborator Takeishi Wataru. It shows Hamasaki singing as seen by a little boy through a kaleidoscope. It makes use of various backgrounds, outfits, makeup, and wigs to bring as much color as possible into the world the little boy sees. At the end, the kaleidoscope lens breaks, and Hamasaki is seen in black and white.

LOVE ~Destiny~ is Hamasaki Ayumi's seventh single. Both LOVE ~Destiny~ and LOVE ~since 1999~ have the same melody, which was composed by Tsunku. LOVE ~since 1999~ also had lyrics by Tsunku and was a duet sung with him. The songs were the sub-theme and main theme, respectively, for the dorama Semidouble. This single reached #1 on the Oricon charts (her first single to do so) and stayed on the charts for a total of twenty-six weeks. It sold 650,790 copies, becoming the #30 single of 1999.
The single was re-released in 2001 on a 12cm format with extra remix songs. This time around the single reached #20 and charted for four weeks.

The music video for "LOVE ~Destiny~" was directed by Takeishi Wataru. It shows Hamasaki recording songs, writing lyrics, facing her fans, and singing against a night sky.

WHATEVER is Hamasaki Ayumi's sixth single. WHATEVER "Version J" was used in Valentine's Day commercials for 7-Eleven, and WHATEVER "Version M" was the ending theme for the TV show ASAYAN. This single reached #5 on the Oricon charts, charted for nine weeks and sold a total of 189,610 copies.
This was Hamasaki's first single to have a techno/dance approach, quite a change from the rock-pop style of "A Song for XX" and its singles.
Version M, the "dance" version, is actually a remix produced by Izumi 'D.M.X' Miyazaki. Version J, the "original" mix of the song, has an arrangement by Keisuke Kikuchi, who also arranged "And then" on the LOVEppears album.
The single was re-released in 2001 on a 12cm format with extra remix songs. This time around the single reached #28 and charted for three weeks.

The music video for WHATEVER was directed by Takeishi Wataru. Hamasaki is singing in a metallic room full of waterfalls while elsewhere, an angel is digging through the remnants of a burned building for any forms of life. The angel is ultimately caught in barbed wire while reaching for a flower, and the video ends with Hamasaki, as an angel, in a cage wrapped in barbed wire.

The title track was used as the opening theme song for the Playstation RPG, Thousand Arms and it was used as the ending theme song for Countdown TV. The B-side was used as the Thousand Arms's ending theme song. The single reached #6 on the Oricon charts and stayed on the charts for a total of nine weeks. During its first week the single sold 36,840 copies, since then the single has sold a total of 131,460 copies. On 1999.06.05, a vinyl record was released of the single which contains remixes of the title track, and it was later included in the "Ayu-mi-x Box Set".
